If you want to get away from the hustle & bustle but are short on time, this route is for you. You’ll take a combination of streets & paved trail to ride around the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area & a soccer park. Keep an eye out for birds, frogs & other critters through the rec area & soccer park. The lake at the center of the rec area trail was created as a result of sand & gravel quarrying & is, logically enough, named Sand Lake. If you’re in need of refreshment on the way back toward downtown Iowa City, you can stop off at Big Grove Tap Room adjacent to the Riverfront Crossings—plenty of bike parking & seating both indoors and out.

Starting from the Iowa City Bike Library at 700 S Dubuque Street in Iowa City, you’ll pedal north to the corner of the Pentacrest, the cluster of five University of Iowa buildings with the original capitol building at the center, built before Iowa’s capitol was moved to Des Moines. Once you head east from downtown, this route combines local streets and paved bike path to stitch together a relaxed ride through the neighborhoods of east Iowa City. Keep an eye out for the new-and-improved bike facilities—wide sidewalks and bike lanes—the City of Iowa City is continually adding and upgrading along this route.

Depart from Solon (easy parking) and head northeast to the historic Sutliff Bridge, a three-span Parker truss design originally built in 1898. The flood of 2008 washed away one span, but the bridge was restored and now provides a unique way for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the Cedar River and enjoy the view. Pro tip: Leave some time for a refreshing break at Baxa’s Tavern at the bridge—cash only! On your return, you might want to take an extra spin around the center of Solon to check out the growing number of restaurants and watering holes.

This route is a laid-back pedal through the countryside southeast of Iowa City. You’ll want to bring water and maybe a snack, since you won’t pass much in the way of services along the way. However, at 18.2 miles into the ride, you might want to stop at Scott Church Park to enjoy the swings next to the corn field and the prairie flowers.

If you’re escaping city traffic, you’re going to love the traffic on this ride—there are often horse-drawn buggies driven by members of the local Amish community. You’ll climb up Bayertown Road to a ridge offering beautiful views of the rolling countryside, a favorite road of many local cyclists. There’s not much for services on this route, with mostly unincorporated towns along the way, so bring your water and a snack. Easy parking in Hills to start.

You might be looking at the total mileage of this ride and wondering why it’s on the list of “Advanced Adventure” rides. Did you check out the total elevation change? This ride is 1,315 feet of climb crammed into 27 miles of rolling drift plain deliciousness, with The Wall rising up to make you hunt for that one smaller gear somewhere in the middle. Along the way, you’ll pedal through Iowa City, North Liberty, and Coralville, with pretty rural roads between.

This is another shorter route for the Advanced Adventure routes, and its challenge lies in two characteristics: significant climbing and punchy hills, and a lot of turning. Bring your cue sheet! The good news is that you’ll come across plenty of options for a refueling stop if needed in Coralville and North Liberty—or just at your start-finish point. This route takes you across the Coralville Dam Spillway. During severe flooding in 1993, water rushed over the spillway and uncovered a prehistoric treasure trove in what is now called the Devonian Fossil Gorge. You might stop and look around!

So many American towns sprang up next to rail lines, and this route takes you through a couple of those. It also takes you past a town, Lone Tree, named for a giant elm tree said to be so large that bison grazed beneath its shade, removing all grass around it and thus protecting it from prairie fire. (Sadly, though, the tree was no match for Dutch Elm Disease.) You’ll pedal along part of Historic US 6, and you’ll visit West Liberty, with a downtown district on the National Register of Historic Places and a bountiful selection of restaurants, many of which feature foods of Latin and South America. You might want to take a break and sample one before pedaling the last 13 or so miles of your adventure.

Starting just south of Iowa City in Hills, this scenic route will take you through the countryside that one of the largest Amish communities west of the Mississippi calls home AND through the town eagerly awaiting the birth of Star Trek’s Captain James T. There’s easy parking for the start in Hills and convenience stores for quick refueling along the way.

Courage Ride

A Multi-Route Bike Ride through Southern Johnson and Washington Counties. Supports the Sarcoma Cancer Research Program at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center

Date: August 14, 2021

Courage Ride, an annual charity bike ride benefiting the University of Iowa’s sarcoma cancer research program. It will resume as both an in-person and virtual event. It also has added a second start/finish location at the Washington County Fairgrounds that will take riders along the Kewash Trail to Keota. The 17th Annual Courage will also return to Big Grove Brewery and Taproom in Iowa City.

The Washington location will offer two routes along the beautiful Kewash Trail, a limestone surfaced trail along a former railway.

Big Grove will offer six routes that will continue to take riders through the scenic Amish countryside near Hills and Kalona and out as far as Washington and Keota, Iowa for the longer routes. A 5 mile Family Fun ride to the Terry Trueblood Recreational Area is also being offered.

Courage Ride is following federal, state and local pandemic guidelines, as of May 2021, to ensure a safe ride experience in 2021. COVID measures are subject to change as regulations, restrictions and recommendations change prior to our August 14th event.

“We feel so blessed to be able to return to in-person riding for those who can. Last year was definitely a challenge and we really missed seeing everyone who has come out and supported us over the past 16 years,” said Courage Ride Director Leora Houghton. “And we are so excited to add Washington, Iowa as a second location. This location is a great opportunity to grow our event and offer a different trail ride experience for those who like to get closer to nature. Growing the event means more dollars going into sarcoma cancer research at the university where they are making great progress on this rare form of cancer.”

Courage Ride honors the life of Seth Bailey, a courageous young man who died at age 25 from sarcoma cancer in 2003. His parents, Jackie and Tom Bailey partnered with Bicyclists of Iowa City (BIC) in 2005 to create a ride that all levels of bicyclists can enjoy.

Courge Ride organizers anticipate between 600 to 700 bicyclists to register for the event. Beginning at 7:00 a.m., bicyclists will travel on 8 different routes. Routes from Big Grove include lengths of 5, 18, 37 (Seth Bailey Courage Loop), 58, 72 or 107 (The Tom Bailey Century) miles. Routes from the Washington County Fairgrounds include lengths of 17 and 35 miles.

Bicyclists at Big Grove can also participate in a silent auction featuring items from a variety of area businesses, organizations and craftsmen along with free skin cancer screenings by University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics dermatologists. The local community is also welcome to participate in the free skin cancer screenings.
A Live Facebook Fundraising event will be held Thursday, August 12th at www.facebook.com/courageride
Proceeds Support Sarcoma Cancer Research
All proceeds from Courage Ride go to the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Sarcoma Research Program. Over the past 16 years, Courage Ride has raised over $660,000 for sarcoma cancer research.

To date, Courage Ride proceeds have seeded numerous sarcoma cancer research grants. Many of those grants have evolved into promising, larger scale research studies. This newfound momentum in the Sarcoma Research Program has created a lot of enthusiasm among researchers, investigators, doctors and cancer care providers at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. The results are leading to new advancements, new partnerships and attracting some of the best research talent in the nation. Patient lives are improved as a result of these research studies and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is gaining worldwide recognition for its expertise in advancing sarcoma research.

Courage Ride’s mission is more crucial than ever considering that funding for cancer research has been shrinking over the past 10 years, according to the American Association for Cancer Research. Yet cancer remains one of the nation’s costliest diseases. The American Cancer Society’s 2020 estimates for soft tissue sarcomas in the United States (these statistics include both adults and children) project that 13,130 new soft tissue sarcomas will be diagnosed (7,470 cases in males and 5,660 cases in females) and 5,270 Americans (2,840 males and 2,430 females) are expected to die of soft tissue sarcomas. Over 100 adults and children in Iowa are diagnosed with sarcoma each year. Sarcoma receives one to two percent of all cancer research funding.

–TEAM TIME TRIAL EVENT–

Are you part of a racing team and have at least 4 members? (or can make several groups of 4?) We will have the option of a team time trial (TTT) where teams of cyclists will race against the clock to try to acquire the fastest time while completing the manifest. The winning team is determined by comparing the times of the fourth-finishing rider on each team. This will require a balance of speed and efficiency so that the team can mostly stay together from beginning to end.

Unlike a traditional team time trial event, there will be no staggered start times and you will start at the same time as the other groups.

Team members will *each* need to complete the manifest (not one manifest per team) so there should be 8 items (or more) PER team member.

However, the bonus buys/items will be PER team, so you cannot stack bonuses just because you have more than one of an item (for the bonus items/buys, you don’t need to have four of them, just one will be acceptable).

–AFTER EVENT PROCEEDINGS–

Afterward, we’ll have presentations, the raffle, and an after-party at Big Grove Brewery on the patio to socialize and mingle in celebration of your charitable good!
