SUMMARY:Drop In Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Drop In bike ride is an informal\, ride at your own risk road ride that departs on Thursday evenings from Riverfront Crossing Park in Iowa City at 5:45pm.  The ride is fast paced (typically 19-22 mph ave speed) with an average distance of about 35-40 miles.  A strong base level of fitness is recommended. The ride emphasizes double pace line drafting\, rotating pace line drafting\, working together\, maintaining steady speeds\, and riding safely.   \nIf you are new to the ride\, try to show up 10 minutes early to ask questions and get tips.  This is a drop ride\, meaning that if you get dropped from the group\, you should be prepared to find your own way back home.  There’s no shame in getting dropped\, we’ve all been there.  In fact\, one of the best ways to learn is to join the ride and hang on as long as you can.  If you get too tired\, simply drop off\, enjoy the rest of the ride\, and try again next time. \nRoad bike recommended for most mortals…or at least a bike with skinny tires.  Lights are required (or at least highly recommended for the ride home). No aero bars. No e-bikes.  Be prepared to fix a flat or call a friend for a ride home if you have mechanical issues.  There’s no sweeper on this ride.  If the weather is bad\, it’s safe to assume no one will be riding. \nLearn more about Group Ride Etiquette here. \n

SUMMARY:Arts & Ice Cream Bike Ride- Iowa River Trail
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an easy-paced bike ride on the JCC’s managed Iowa River Trail. This ride will meander along the Iowa River Trail from Iowa City to North Liberty and back. Along the way\, we will visit the home studio of local artist Deanne Wortman surrounded by woods and full of inspiration and whimsy. We will also stop in North Liberty at locally-run Heyn’s Ice Cream for a sweet treat before heading back to Iowa City. \nThis will be a ~14 mile bike ride. Participants must provide their own bike and are asked to wear a helmet during the ride. The cost of any ice cream or art work is not included with this registration. Participants are encouraged to bring cash to cover their own expenses. \n  \nAbout Deanne Wortman:\nBe sure to catch Deanne Wortman’s gallery exhibit “Deanne’s Studio: 50 years of intermedia artmaking in Iowa City\,” during the month of September at The ArtiFactory in Iowa City! An opening reception is happening on Friday\, September 4 from 6:00-8:00 pm. \n[From the ArtiFactory website] Deanne Wortman is a longtime Iowa City artist whose work radiates curiosity\, play\, and a deep commitment to community. Trained in printmaking\, drawing\, and intermedia arts at the University of Iowa\, she has built a career that moves fluidly between traditional craft and experimental technique. \nWortman is especially known for her innovative use of hotstamped foil imaging—a process developed at the University of Iowa—which she has helped refine\, teach\, and keep alive through decades of practice. \nHer art often blends narrative whimsy with meticulous surface experimentation\, a sensibility shaped in part by her twenty years working in Children’s Services at the Iowa City Public Library.  Beyond her studio practice\, Wortman is a generous mentor and arts organizer\, active in local institutions as a teacher\, board member\, and collaborator. Her presence in the Iowa City arts ecosystem is that of a connector—someone who not only makes distinctive work but also cultivates the creative energy of the community around her. \nJCC Event Information \nPhotos may be taken for promotion during the event. Please email jccnaturalists@gmail.com to request no photos be taken of you/your family. \nRegistration automatically closes one business day in advance. You will receive an email from the leading naturalist a couple days in advance of the program. If you do not receive this emails\, you may not be registered; call 319-645-1011 for assistance in this case.
